Water Damage and HVAC Systems

Have you ever wondered what happens when your HVAC system is exposed to excessive moisture? It’s usually not pretty. That’s because water is one of the most destructive elements when it comes to machinery–and HVAC systems are no exception.

Water damage can cause various common HVAC problems that impact the overall function of your system, including:

Corrosion of Components

• Metal parts like coils and fan blades can rust when exposed to water.
• Corroded parts weaken over time, leading to system inefficiencies and malfunctions.
• Regular inspection of these parts helps catch early signs of corrosion before they become severe.

Electrical Failures

• Water can damage electrical components, causing short circuits or complete failure.
• Malfunctioning electrical parts may pose safety hazards and lead to costly repairs.
• Call us to replace water-exposed wiring and components to prevent long-term issues.

Mold Growth

• Water trapped inside ducts creates a breeding ground for mold, which harms indoor air quality.
• Mold exposure may cause respiratory issues, especially for vulnerable populations.
• Regular duct cleaning and dehumidifying will help prevent mold after a hurricane.

Refrigerant Leaks and Cooling Failures

Did you know that hurricanes can cause damage to refrigerant lines? A properly functioning air conditioning unit relies heavily on its refrigerant to cool your home. However, common HVAC problems after hurricanes can include refrigerant leaks, which prevent the unit from cooling effectively.

Hurricanes and Damage to Refrigerant Lines

• Strong winds and flying debris can puncture or disconnect refrigerant lines.
• Without proper levels of refrigerant, the air conditioning unit cannot cool effectively, causing increased indoor temperatures and discomfort.
• Grable Plumbing & Air can inspect for leaks and recharge refrigerant to restore cooling.

Compressor Overheating

• Refrigerant leaks can cause the system to overwork, leading to compressor overheating.
• Overheating can cause permanent damage to the compressor, a vital component of your HVAC system.
• Regular maintenance and quick detection of leaks prevent costly compressor replacements. Consider joining our HVAC maintenance plan to keep your system fine-tuned at all times.

Clogged Air Filters and Reduced Airflow

Have you noticed a decrease in airflow from your vents after a storm? It might not be your imagination. This can happen from clogged air filters caused by debris and dirt circulating through the system.

Dirt and Debris Accumulation After a Hurricane

• During hurricanes, airborne debris such as leaves, dust, and sand can enter the system and clog filters.
• Clogged filters reduce airflow and force the system to work harder to distribute air, leading to higher energy bills and potential wear and tear on the system.
• Replacing filters regularly helps maintain proper airflow and system efficiency.

Blocked Outdoor Units

• Outdoor HVAC units are especially vulnerable to damage from flying debris or flooding during hurricanes.
• Blockages in the outdoor unit reduce the efficiency of the entire system and can lead to overheating.
• Ensure the area around the outdoor unit is clear of debris, and check for any physical damage after the storm.

Electrical Power Surges

Have you considered how hurricanes affect the electrical systems in your home, especially your HVAC unit? Hurricanes often bring lightning and power outages. These outages can cause surges that impact your HVAC system’s electrical components.

Impact of Power Surges

• Power surges can fry delicate electrical components, such as circuit boards and transformers, within the HVAC system.
• These surges may cause immediate failure or long-term damage that can reduce the system’s lifespan.
• Investing in surge protectors or whole-home surge protection can safeguard your HVAC system against future surges.

Thermostat Failures

• Electrical surges often affect thermostats, making it impossible to control indoor temperatures.
• If your thermostat is malfunctioning after a storm, replacing it may be necessary to restore functionality to the system.
• Consider upgrading to a smart thermostat for more control and energy savings in the long run.

Contaminated Ductwork and Indoor Air Quality

Have you thought about the impact of storm-related contaminants on your indoor air quality? Hurricanes can stir up dust, mold, and other pollutants, which can infiltrate your ductwork and compromise the air you breathe indoors.

Storm Debris in Ducts

• Ducts can become filled with debris, dirt, or even pests following hurricanes.
• Contaminated ducts reduce airflow and distribute pollutants throughout your home, decreasing indoor air quality.
• Regular cleaning of ducts by professionals after a storm helps maintain a healthy living environment.

Impact on Indoor Air Quality

• Poor air quality can exacerbate allergies and respiratory issues, especially when ductwork is compromised.
• Mold growth within ducts can worsen over time–never ignore water damage in your home!
• Using high-efficiency air filters can significantly improve indoor air quality after hurricanes.
