Many Tampa Bay homes heat with a heat pump, and for most of the year it quietly runs as an air conditioner. Then the first real cold front rolls through, you switch over to heat, and suddenly the outdoor unit is steaming, clicking or running far longer than you’re used to. Is something wrong? Usually not. Here’s what’s normal for a heat pump in cold weather, and the signs that mean it’s time to call for heat pump repair, whether you live in Tampa, Brandon, Valrico or FishHawk.
A heat pump doesn’t burn fuel to make heat. It pulls heat out of the outdoor air and moves it inside. Even on a 40-degree morning there’s heat in that air to collect, but the colder it gets, the harder the system has to work to gather it. That’s why longer run times on chilly days are expected and usually nothing to worry about.
When the outdoor coil gets cold and damp, a light layer of frost can form on it. Your heat pump clears that frost with a defrost cycle. The outdoor fan stops, you may hear a click or a whoosh as the system switches over, and you might see steam rising from the unit for a few minutes. It looks dramatic, but it’s the system doing its job.
Many heat pumps have backup heat strips that kick in during defrost or when the house needs to warm up quickly. The first time they run each season, you may notice a faint dusty smell. If it fades within a few minutes, that’s just dust burning off. If the smell lingers or smells like burning plastic, turn the system off and give us a call. Make sure your system is set to heat and set a few degrees above the room temperature. Swap out a dirty air filter, and clear away leaves, mulch or patio furniture crowding the outdoor unit so it can breathe. If none of that helps, it’s time for a professional look. Our fall HVAC checklist has a few more quick checks to run before the next cold front.
